Flexible working isn’t going anywhere. So how do we make it work?

Despite the regular headlines about organisations ordering people back into the office, flexible and homeworking are definitely not going anywhere.

In early 2025, ONS figures showed that 28% of working adults in Great Britain were hybrid working. Now, the government has announced plans to strengthen employees’ rights by making employers properly discuss flexible-working requests and explain why they are turning them down.

This doesn’t create an automatic right to work from home. Not every job can be done remotely and not every request can be accepted. But the direction of travel is clear: flexibility is becoming an established part of how we work, not a temporary post-pandemic experiment.

That makes it even more important that organisations stop relying on physical proximity to create connection.

Being in the same building doesn’t automatically make people feel connected and doesn’t automatically make collaboration work. Equally, working from different locations doesn’t have to leave people feeling isolated, overlooked or out of the loop.

At Connection Heroes, we teach that real human connection means colleagues feeling seen, heard, valued and trusted. It means people being able to communicate clearly, collaborate effectively and have honest conversations, regardless of their physical location.

In day-to-day working life, that might mean:

  • running meetings so remote colleagues can contribute equally, rather than feeling like observers
  • agreeing clear communication habits so people know what belongs in an email, a Teams message or a conversation
  • managers checking in with genuine curiosity, rather than simply checking up on progress
  • making expectations, responsibilities and decisions visible, so nobody has to rely on overheard office conversations
  • creating the trust and psychological safety people need to challenge ideas, admit mistakes and ask for help
  • building simple team rituals that keep relationships strong without filling everybody’s diary with more meetings.

This is absolutely our sweet spot.

We give leaders, managers and teams the mindset, skillset and toolset to stay connected and work brilliantly together, wherever they happen to be working.

Our approach blends neuroscience, Agile tools and human-centred design with years of practical experience helping remote teams collaborate. We translate that into straightforward skills, tools and rituals that teams can use in the real world.

Flexible working isn’t the enemy of human connection. But connection no longer happens by default. Leaders need to prioritise it intentionally and build connection skills into their learning and development plans.

If you’re trying to make hybrid or distributed teamwork really work, not just function, we’d love to have a conversation. Every team needs Connection Heroes, and we’re the people to make that happen!
